Cametrics Ltd, a Cambridge high technology software development company, has recently completed the development of raster image processor (RIP) engine software and electronics for a new printer system on behalf of Printos, a division of Videojet Ltd. The printer is based on Videojet's unique valvejet printhead technology, which offers the industry's highest volume throughput to date.

The new technology has prompted a surge of interest from textile printer manufacturers looking for monochrome, spot and full colour printing for heavier fabrics including towels and carpets.

Until now digital printing has been limited to relatively light fabrics because of the small drop volumes. The new Printos heads can be used on the heaviest fabrics, making short print runs economic and opening up new markets.

In June 2005, the head technology was demonstrated at FESPA, the leading European textile printing trade show. Mike Fox, general manager of Printos, says: "This is an entirely new applications market. A critical element for us was to be able to demonstrate the head technology with a flexible datapath to a very tight timescale. Working with Cametrics has achieved that for us."

Jim Taylor, MD at Cametrics agrees: "We see a second generation of ink jet applications developing such as the Printos technology. Our goal is to offer system integrators datapath, RIP engine and software solutions so that they can reach market quickly and concentrate on where the value lies, in the head and ink technologies".
